The Whirling Dervish's Attire and Its Symbols
Semazen hırkasını çıkararak manen hakikate doğar. Başındaki sikke nefsinin mezar taşını, üzerindeki tennure nefsinin kefenini simgeler. Kollarını çapraz bağlayarak "bir" rakamını temsil eder ve Allah'ın birliğini tasdik eder. Semâ ederken sağ eli dua edercesine göğe, sol eli yere dönüktür: Hak'tan aldığını halka saçar; kalbin etrafında sağdan sola dönerek bütün yaratılmışları sevgiyle kucaklar.

The 7 Parts of the Sema Ceremony
- Naat-i Sharif: It begins with the na't composed by Itri, praising the Prophet.
- Kudüm drum beat: Represents the divine command "Kun = Be" in Creation.
- Ney taksim (improvisation): Represents the divine breath that gives life to everything.
- Devr-i Veled: The whirling dervishes' circular walk to the peşrev, greeting each other three times, is the soul's greeting to the soul.
- The Four Salutations: The whirling dervish removes his black cloak and, with permission from the Sheikh, begins the sema.
- Recitation of the Holy Quran: The section where verse 115 of Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.
- Al-Fatiha and prayer: The ceremony ends with the Fatiha and a prayer recited for the souls of all prophets, martyrs and believers.

Mevlevi Music and the Mutrib
Semahanelerde neyzen, kudümzen, naathan ve ayinhanlar "Mutrıp" adı verilen müzik grubunu oluşturur. Sema mukabelesi sırasında bu grubun icra ettiği, Mevlevi bestekârlarca semaya eşlik etmek için bestelenmiş eserlere Mevlevi ayinleri denir. The Sema is part of Turkish history, traditions and beliefs, and was born and developed through the inspiration of Mevlana (1207-1273). It represents a spiritual journey (Miraj) towards perfection, a journey there and back.

Semahanede girişin tam karşısında Şeyh Postu bulunur. Post ile giriş arasında var sayılan "Hatt-ı İstiva" adlı kutsal çizgi semahaneyi iki yarım daireye böler; semazenler bu görünmez çizgiye basmadan ve sırt çevirmeden karşıya geçer. Kırmızı renkli post en büyük manevi makamdır, doğuşu ve var oluşu temsil eder. Mutrıp ve semazenler Şeyh Postu'nu selamladıktan sonra yerlerini alır ve Semâ Töreni başlar.
